Why: Charleston Promise Neighborhood’s (CPN) programming focuses on creating safe, engaging environments for children in our tough, high-poverty schools to explore, through natural curiosity, the world around them. This exploration accelerates learning in literacy, science, technology and mathematics, and helps to develop the 21ST Century Skills (critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity) needed to succeed in school, career, and in life. CPN Family Science Night is an evening of families completing a STEM-related project together. The evening sparks an interest in STEM concepts with a hands-on, kid-friendly project that: 1) generates enthusiasm for STEM initiatives; 2) gives families a chance to explore science, and 3) strengthens the family unit through intentional Parent & Community Engagement programming.
We are expecting about 350 people to participate. During this event, volunteers will help families create a STEM Design Project. Volunteer task assignments will consist of introducing themselves and the work of their companies, demonstrating step-by-step how to complete the projects (which takes about 30 minutes to complete), interacting with families and helping them complete the project, and breaking down project areas.
We need approximately 20 volunteers. We are requesting that your organization supports our October Family Science Night by encouraging 3 to 4 volunteers to participate. The volunteer commitment includes an orientation lunch as well as attendance on October 31st.
